Saturday morning, Mom looked tired.
The laundry basket was full.
"Mom, let me wash the clothes!" said Mina. "I want to help."
Mom looked at the basket. Then she looked at Mina.
"Okay," she said. "It is your job today."
Mina was seven. She had never washed clothes before.
But she felt proud. "Your job" sounded important.
Mom showed her the washing machine. "Here is the soap. Here are the buttons."
"Should I press the red one?" asked Mina.
Mom opened her mouth to answer. Then she stopped. She thought,
"If I tell her everything, she will never learn by herself."
"You decide," Mom said. "I am here if you need me."
Mina pressed the red button. Water came in. Bubbles came out.
Lots and lots of bubbles! They fell on the floor. They covered Mina's feet.
"Oh no!" cried Mina. "Too much soap! Mom, I made a mess!"
Mom came to the door. She did not shout. She did not say, "I told you so."
"It is a big mess," Mom agreed. "And a big job to clean. Where are the towels?"
Mina wiped the floor. Then she took out the clothes. Mom's white T-shirt was pink!
"The red socks!" said Mina. "I washed them together. Now your shirt is pink. I did it wrong."
Mom held up the shirt and looked at it. "Now it is a new color," she said. "Pink is my favorite."
